Character Feature – Mooney

Oops! Apologies, but it's been a long time since I posted anything here! Sorry, it's the demands of work, personal life and actually writing the book etc etc. Yeah, yeah, I'm sure you've heard all these excuses before. However, I can happily say that I am well on the way to writing the remainder of the first draft and hopefully I'll be able to get that written pretty soon!

So, to make up for no recent posts, here's another character feature. This time, I shall introduce you to Ellis' dull-witted sidekick, Mooney. What can I say about him? Well, nothing good really, apart from the fact that his mere presence at Ellis' side seems to boost the latter's ego somewhat (well, I suppose somebody has to!) Mooney knew Ellis from years ago, and was a 'henchman' at school. Later on, in the post-Apocalyptic mess which Britain has become, they are thrown together again in the service of the same New Marcher Lord. They fight side-by-side against the Ironsides, along with the hero of the story, Patrick, who has the misfortune of knowing them both.

Later on, Ellis and Mooney swap sides and act as guides for a unit of soldiers who are seeking Patrick (see the Ellis post). A thin, gangly man, with messy, dark hair, Mooney himself is a somewhat stupid character, slow on the uptake but also easily manipulated. Being of low intelligence, he delights in executing Ellis' bullying antics and dances to the tune which the latter plays. Basically, without Ellis this guy would be a nothing and nobody (which I reckon he is anyway!), so being in Ellis' presence gives him a sense of purpose.

I have recently written about a scene where this character gets his 'just desserts', by the way. Getting to this stage has felt like an achievement!

Until the next time….
