Happy New Year to all the readers of Dragon Line (I was hoping to write this post yesterday, but New Year indulgence and IT problems got in the way!!)

What better way to get the New Year off to a start than having another character feature? I thought it’d be good to do something of a follow up to the featured page from a couple of weeks back. If any of you had chance to read it, you may recall the page featured the last testament of Patrick Kynaston. In this, Patrick makes reference to the neo-feudal landlord to whom he and his companions swear allegiance, and whose fortification is being laid siege to by the Ironsides. He refers to this landlord as Lord Hodnet, a local New Marcher ruler. In the wake of the collapse of central authority in Britain after the last energy shock, a new breed of regional warlords emerged and took over. This included those in the marches of Wales who, like their forebears from the medieval period, were very much a law unto themselves and who resisted any outside influence. Even though a sort of hierarchy existed amongst the New Marcher Lords themselves, ostensibly under the control of the self-styled 'Duke of Shrewsbury', very often the individual landowners would follow their own agenda and maybe even rebel. When the Ironsides invade, many of the local lords rallied to their cause.

Hodnet, however, decided not to side with those who threw in their lot with the Ironsides. Being a staunch Royalist, he remained loyal to the Duke and insisted on resisting those whom he believed to be the living incarnation of evil. He still steadfastly clung to the Royalist ideal, even though the monarchy had long since fled the country. A man of thin build but fairly tall stature, his ideals remained stubbornly fixed, even in the face of terminal adversity. The problem for his men was that they had little choice but to face their enemy and fight, remaining trapped like rats in their fortification despite the fact that the odds were against them. Hodnet’s intransigence and his poor grasp of reality spelt doom for those below him, however his decision in the circumstances also formed the beginning of the journey which the main character undertakes. More will be revealed in due course…..

Until the next time.
