This is the second video feature on Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle (sorry about the wind again!!)
The 'Stone Cow' is located just up the track from the circle itself. Its a menhir that ended up on its side. Was it one that never made it to the circle or a standing stone that fell to the ground and has been there ever since (I suspect the latter!)
The legend would further have you believe that this is what happened to the Fairy Cow when it ran away – it turned into stone here, hence the name given by the locals!
I wanted to include this, as it's actually another nice little feature so I reckon. I only wish I'd been feeling a bit fitter so I could have gone onto Stapely Hill to video some of the others up there – plus the fantastic view. Oh well, there's always next time!
Anyhow, I strongly believe that the 'Stone Cow' was a standing stone that originally marked the route to the circle itself. There were probably once others along there too, but they've long since gone if there were! The reason I include this is because I've depicted the characters from the book travelling along this route to their objective at the circle itself. The objective? Well, all will be revealed in due course…
Next week, I'm on holiday in North Wales, so I hope to be able to film some of the location scenes there. Watch this space for more video location features!
As an aside, I was watching Channel Four News tonight. At the end, they mentioned J G Ballard in a report. His family have just donated some hand-written manuscripts of his to the British Library (I think it was there!) One really interesting thing about him was that he remained in his 'semi' in Shepperton to continue his writing, even after earning lots of money from royalties. Apparently, he believed it was better to do this, so he could interact with ordinary people and write better stories. How cool is that? Good on him, I say!
Until the next time….
