So, here we are again – another location feature! This is another place I like I lot for two good reasons: a) its a castle (built by a Welsh Prince); b) it's in Wales, most specifically Snowdonia, Llanberis. But why is it on here, as a location feature?
Well, in the future scenario of Dragon Line, Llanberis becomes a commune 'capital' for the local tribal Militia known as the Dragons (you'll probably remember meeting the leader, Iolo, in the character features – if not, check out the earlier post!) Its here that they locate their fort-cum-headquarters. Why? Well, because the location is on a promontory point near to the Royal Victoria hotel, which itself becomes the Mayor's residence. It also commands the Llanberis Pass and looks out onto the two lakes of Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris (notice in the film how low they were looking? A hot summer indeed – a taste of things to come, maybe?) The Keep (now in the care of CADW) was believed to have been built by Llewellyn Fawr in the 13th Century to imprison his brother.
In the video, you can see this Keep as well as the foundations of the various out-buildings that once formed part of the fortification. In the time of Dragon Line, the Dragons rebuild and re-fortify this, surrounding it with a sturdy stockade. Some of the action in the novel takes place here. As I pan the camera round, you can see as well the surrounding mountains, the lakes, the old slate quarry and the nearby wood where Llew's house is located. (Apologies for the sound as well, the wind was playing up again, so sometimes its difficult to hear me!)
This is the first video taken here. The next one will show you a bit more of this marvellous site. There's open access here so it's easy to visit. If you are ever in Llanberis, I'd recommend parking in the nearby 'Pay-and-Display'. It is a bit pricey, but at least you can access here and the rest of the village. There is a smaller free car park accessible from the road as you come in to Llanberis from the road, but this might be a bit dicey in Winter and also might get full up as well.
Until the next video…
